Many of us at Superior Lexus LOVE to read. It's not uncommon to see someone at lunch reading a novel, talking about one or even writing their own (Yes, one of our technicians is writing a book! How fun is that?!) To me, there is nothing like cracking open a good book - one that you have been waiting to read for months. (Darn those teaser excerpts!)

But I think our customers are the biggest readers of all. More often that not, I will go into our customer lounge and ask someone what they are reading and why they chose that book - and guess what they say. "A friend/family member recommended it." Or, "I saw it on Amazon and the reviews were great!" Or, one of my favorites, "I liked the cover." Of course.

We thought it would be fun to ask "what is on YOUR nightstand". Here is what is on ours right now:

1. 77 Shadow Street by Dean Koontz - If chilling thrillers aren't your style, then you won't want anything to do with tale of The Pendleton Mansion. New York Times bestselling author (who has sold over 400 million copies of his suspense thrillers to date) Dean Koontz, brings this haunting tale to life not only through words but with a video game tour of the mansion on his website where YOU can be a part of the terror (SO COOL - a must play!)

2. If You Were Here by Jen Lancaster - If there were ever a lady that could make you LAUGH OUT LOUD and PUT A SERIOUS STITCH IN YOUR SIDE, this is her. This queen of sweating Chardonnay and hilarious footnotes (one of the best parts about her books!) brings forth sarcastic richness like no other and promises to entertain you after a long dreary day at the office.

3. Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson - The name says it all. This creative, brilliant man set the tone for inventive technology as we know it.

4. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer - Travel along with this brilliant 9 year old as he goes on a secret mission to find a lock that matches a key that his father gave to him...right before he died in the World Trade Center on the crisp morning of Sept. 11.

5. Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand - The story of Louis Zamperini, an Army leiutenant in 1943 who survived when his bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a foundering raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Unbroken is a testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit. COULD NOT put this one down! A MUST READ!

Ah, winter in the midwest. Here in Kansas City, there is no SNOW in the near forecast, but it certainly is cold outside! It is so tempting to curl up next to a fire and do nothing - but where is the fun in that? So we have just the list for you!

1. WHEN WE GET SNOW (BECAUSE, YOU KNOW WE WILL! -) GO SLEDDING! When people think of sledding in Kansas City – they think - SUICIDE HILL! Well, that is if we get any SNOW! Suicide Hill is located just south of the Country Club Plaza at the park between 53rd/54th Street and Brookside Boulevard, on the East side.

2. Have a movie marathon with your family and friends. The funnier the better! (One of our favorites is Cars 2 - of course:)

So what sparked this post? I was in the airport yesterday flying back from training in Charlotte, North Carolina. I happened to sit next to a talkative gentlemen, and with the fact that I work for Superior Lexus, a debate sparked. I won't say what kind of vehicle he owns, but we were debating about the quality of Lexus vehicles and why Lexus is the best! For those Lexus enthusiasts, have you found yourself in a similar situation? It's hard to explain how special these vehicles are because you can't put into words how nice the quality is. I dug up something on the web that provides great evidence and it depicts how unique the Lexus brand truly is. Superior Lexus has teamed up with Team Lucy and will be participating in the CureSearch for Children's Cancer at Arrowhead Stadium on April 30,2011. The money raised will fund and support collaborative research to find a cure for all childhood cancers. We need your support. He has been in the Automotive Industry for 8 years and he particularly loves Lexus because “Lexus is the finest automotive maker in the world”. Jack was born in Lincoln, Nebraska and has grown to be an avid NU and KU fan. In his spare time, he enjoys golfing, and watching sports. He won the State Championship in two swimming events and spent four years in the US Marine Corps. Kurk Lowry Receives Recognition for an Outstanding Job at the 2010 Randy Dorton Hendrick Engine Builders Showdown

Superior Lexus gathered today to recognize Kurk Lowry and his outstanding appearance that he made at the 2010 Randy Dorton Hendrick Engine Builders Showdown. This event was created nine years ago as a way for Rick Hendrick to recognize the talents of his engine employees with the Hendrick Motorsports and the Hendrick Automotive Group. The late Randy Dorton was instrumental in the development of this competition. He was a legendary engine builder who set the bar for future engine builders. The competition couples 12 individuals from Hendrick Motorsports with 12 individuals from the Hendrick Automotive Group. These 12 teams compete in the build-off to determine the best and fastest engine building pair.

Kurk Lowry has been with Superior Lexus for 9 years and exemplifies all the qualities that make an exceptional engine builder. He has always been hard working and continually finds ways to improve. Kurk Lowry, first-time participant, was paired with Mike Maiwald from Hendrick Motorsports and both took second place with an impressive time of 24:18.

Phil Humbert, Executive General Manager and VP, was proud to present Kurk Lowry with an award and the gift of a leather jacket for a job well done. Congratulations Kurk! This is a very impressive and well deserved honor!

Toyota Acceleration Problem Not Caused by Electronic Flaw

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration's investigation into Toyota safety problems found no electronic flaws to account for reports of sudden, unintentional acceleration and other safety problems. Government investigators said Tuesday the only known cause of the problems are mechanical defects that were fixed in previous recalls.

The Transportation Department, assisted by engineers with NASA, said its 10-month study of Toyota vehicles concluded there was no electronic cause of unintended high-speed acceleration in Toyotas. The study, which was launched at the request of Congress, responded to consumer complaints that flawed electronics could be the culprit behind Toyota's spate of recalls.

"We enlisted the best and brightest engineers to study Toyota's electronics systems and the verdict is in. There is no electronic-based cause for unintended acceleration in Toyotas," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement.

The recalls have posed a major challenge for the world's No. 1 automaker, which has scrambled to protect its reputation for safety and reliability.

Toyota did not immediately comment on the report. Shares of the automaker climbed on the New York Stock Exchange following the news.

Toyota paid the U.S. government a record $48.8 million in fines for its handling of three recalls. The company has said it has not found any flaws in its electronic throttle control systems and said the previously announced recalls have addressed the safety concerns.

LaHood said engineers from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration "rigorously examined" nine Toyotas driven by consumers who complained of unintended acceleration. NASA reviewed 280,000 lines of software code to look for flaws that could cause the acceleration. Investigators tested mechanical components in Toyotas that could lead to the problem and bombarded vehicles with electro-magnetic radiation to see whether it could make the electronics cause the cars to speed up.

Despite its findings, LaHood said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration was considering new regulations to improve safety. They include requiring brake override systems on all vehicles, standardizing keyless ignition systems and requiring event data recorders, or vehicle black boxes, on all new vehicles.

Transportation officials said they would also consider conducting more research on electronic control systems and review the placement and design of accelerator and brake pedals.

In Tokyo on Tuesday, Toyota reported a 39 percent slide in quarterly profit but raised its full-year forecasts for earnings and car sales. It is a mixed picture for the automaker, which is enjoying booming sales in high-growth markets in Asia, Africa and South America, while facing lingering worries about quality lapses in the U.S.

In addition to the recalls, Toyota began installing brake override systems on new vehicles. The systems automatically cut the throttle when the brake and gas pedals are applied at the same time. The company also created engineering teams to examine vehicles that are the subject of consumer complaints and appointed a chief quality officer for North America amid complaints its U.S. division did not play a large enough role in making safety decisions.

Consumer advocates and safety groups raised concerns that flawed electronics could be causing unwanted acceleration in the Toyotas. They have questioned the reliability of the event data recorders studied by the government, saying they could be faulty or fail to tell the whole story of the individual crashes.

Toyota's safety issues received broad attention from the government after four people were killed in a high-speed crash involving a Lexus near San Diego in August 2009.

NHTSA has received about 3,000 reports of sudden acceleration incidents involving Toyota vehicles during the past decade, including allegations of 93 deaths. NHTSA, however, has confirmed just five of them.

Congress considered sweeping safety legislation last year that would have required brake override systems, raised penalties on auto companies that evade safety recalls and given the government the power to quickly recall vehicles. The National Academy of Sciences is conducting a separate study of unintended acceleration in cars and trucks across the auto industry. The panel is expected to release its findings this fall.

Tips and Tricks- Driving on Snow and Ice

With this winter storm about to hit, it is important to be prepared and know how to drive in the snow, or in icy conditions. First thing, if it's not necessary to leave your house, don't risk it. It's not worth it. Second of all, if you plan on going somewhere, be sure that your vehicle is prepared for the harsh conditions. How can you make sure that your vehicle is ready for harsh winter conditions?

View this video to help prepare you and your vehicle for this winter storm. Yes, this video is annoying and it's obvious that it's important to have good visibility, but it's worth watching. :)

Tips and Tricks- Driving on Snow and Ice

Now that you have your vehicle ready for the winter storm, it’s important to know HOW to drive in the icy and snowy conditions that are about to hit.

1. Drive at a reduced speed! That 65-mph speed limit on the signs on the highway does not apply when roads are covered in snow and ice. Speed limits are there to tell you the MAX and it IS OKAY to go a minimum speed if the weather is unfavorable  besides, accidents at higher speeds are more dangerous. We aren’t California drivers after all… (I’d hate to think how California drivers would handle this mid-west weather! FAIL).

2. Don’t Turn the Wheel Too Suddenly While Driving: On normal roads, it’s okay to ‘whip the wheel’ around turns but on icy and snowy conditions, turning should be done smoothly and deliberately. P.S. Don’t accelerate through turns either while road conditions are icy/snowy. You will fishtail.

3. Keep as much distance between you and the vehicle in front of you as possible! Increase the time and space between your vehicle and others will give you more time to prepare if an accident happens in front of you. More time and space gives you room to breath and room to avoid potential accidents.

4. Driving Uphill- Key: avoid stopping at all costs! Because once you stop, you’re stuck.

5. Driving Downhill- Drive as slow as possible, switch to lower gears to slow down when necessary and try not to use the breaks if possible. Leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front of you.

My wife and I are really enjoying the 2010 LS460! I had no problems getting it across the border thanks to your help. The inspections validated that the Lexus LS460 meets all Canadian specs. I just had to pay the $4000 duty (built in Japan), GST and inspection fees and I was good to go!

I want to say that Superior Lexus really does a Superior job! Chris Nottage was excellent! We made the deal by cell phone as I was coming out of the movie theatre in Chinook Mall in Calgary.
But what really impressed me was that the staff didn't just talk customer service - they walked the talk!

The day after Chris and I reached a deal by telephone was his day off and in order to get all the paperwork in place to meet the Registrar of Imported Vehicles requirements and to get the car home well before Christmas, I had to call just about every department in Superior Lexus. I was so impressed! The people staffing the phones never left me hanging or transferred me to a department where no one answered! They would say, "Well, if you can hang on a minute, I will walk over [to Sales, or Finance or Service] and find someone who can help you!" It was really terrific!

The icing on the cake was that your folks in Finance were able to generate a Bill of Sale and a Title with my name on it and send it to RIV without having received any money! Now that may not be standard practice, but Superior Lexus was willing to do whatever was possible in order to meet my needs. Customer Service isn't just talk at Superior Lexus. It is truly ingrained in the culture of the organization. And that doesn't happen over night!

December 16th through December 18th will be a busy time for Kansas City. The Sprint Center will host the NCAA Division I Women’s Final Four in volleyball. You don't have to be an avid volleyball fan; this is an experience for everyone! You WILL be pleasantly surprised. We have teamed up with WIN for KC, a non-profit organization that promotes women in athletics, to help promote a marathon that is coming up this summer. WIN for KC will host the NCAA Powerade Youth Volleyball Clinic on Saturday, December 18 from 4:30pm-6:45pm. Natalie Uhart, one of our Business Development Representatives, played volleyball in college and will take part in this clinic and help coach the youth!

Priscilla Meinheit has been happily married to Ron for 36 years and is a proud mother of two children. Her daughter is pursuing a Masters Degree and her son is an active member of the U.S. Marine Corps. She enjoys embroidering, reading, baking, playing the piano, and taking dance classes in her spare time. Priscilla describes herself as easy going, happy and one to have a good sense of humor. She used to be a Church Choir Director and hopes to one day travel to Germany. When asked what she enjoys most about her new position as a Delivery Specialist, she says, "staying busy and meeting interesting people". In order to do this they must be Lexus Master Certified, ASE Master Certified, Hendrick Master Certified AND finish in the TOP 4 in a special ASE test. If you are not familiar with Richard Murtha here at Superior Lexus South, you are missing out! You will normally find Richard hard at work, but hard work is what got him where he is today!

Superior Lexus is the 1st automotive dealership I have worked for, and have been here for 7yrs. I found out about a job opening from the service managers son who I had attended high school with. Teresa Holt had been asking about me for 3 yrs at my previous job to work for her, so I finally came in and applied to become a car wash porter. After working 4 months I then moved over to the New/Pre-owned Detail deptartment cleaning the vehicles for new owners. Being in that department for shortly over one year I just happened to walk by Teresa office and she had mentioned about the Assistant Service Consultant position, in which I signed up for. I never thought I would be working in customer service as I was a very shy person and not the most open or talkative person at all. After waiting patiently for 7yrs a BIG SURPRISE awakens and here at Superior Lexus South I hear we are making a 5th Service Consultant Team which will include myself leading the Pink Team. I’m very stoked about the position and ready to continuously strive to help our guest and welcome them as family just as I have been treated and brought into this fabulous dealership.

During my off time outside of work my biggest enjoyment is riding motorcycles, in which there are a few co-workers who attracted my interest into motorcycles and that’s why I have one now, and am on my 3rd bike and 6th year of riding. I also like to relax at home watching movies. I love food and not afraid to try anything new. Favorites are Italian food and Sushi.

2011 IS Official Details

The IS model will be receiving some minor updates for new year:

*The HID headlights have been redesigned and now include LED daytime running lights. Update: HID lights are optional on the IS 250 and standard on the IS 350.

*The front grille & front bumper have been reworked.

*The taillights have had an update, along with the tailpipes.

*The steering wheel has been tweaked, and the glovebox now has a nice chrome accent.

New 17″ wheels are standard, new 18″ wheels are optional.

**However, the bigger news is that along minor cosmetic update, the IS 350 will now be available in All-Wheel Drive, which brings the grip and improved traction to the IS’ more powerful engine option.**

Lexus GX 460 Recall Announcement

In response to last week’s Consumer Reports warning of the GX 460’s handling during a high-speed test, today Lexus announced a voluntary recall of all 9,400 2010 model year GX 460s sold to date. These models will receive a software update to the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system. Quoting from the press release:

The VSC system helps control a loss of traction in turns as a result of front or rear wheel slippage during cornering.

“Toyota’s objective is to provide a high level of safety and quality, while meeting or surpassing governmental regulations. Our engineers have conducted tests to confirm the VSC performance issue raised by Consumer Reports, and we are confident this VSC software update addresses the concern,” said Steve St. Angelo, Toyota chief quality officer for North America.

All Lexus dealers will have the VSC software update by the end of April. Once the software update is available at dealerships, vehicle owners are encouraged to bring their 2010 GX 460 to a dealer at their earliest convenience for the update at no cost. The update should take approximately one hour depending on the dealers’ work schedule.

Although no accidents have been reported resulting from this issue, the VSC update should improve the vehicle’s response to situations like the Consumer Reports test. If you are a GX 460 owner, the full press release from Lexus USA may be helpful.

Lexus led all luxury brands for the month, posting a substantial 36.5% increase in overall sales by daily rate and a 42.0% increase by overall volume. On the car front, the ES and IS lines posted healthy gains, up 15.1% and 24.0% respectively. The refreshed LS line held steady, and the new GX and RX lines continued to show strong growth. Revised models and the improved economy are likely factors to the big sales increase, along with sweetened lease and financing deals.

Overall, it seems that Lexus sales are continuing their recovery from industry-wide difficulties in 2009, although the coming months will tell if Lexus can maintain its luxury market leadership for longer than a decade. Already BMW execs have claimed that they expect Lexus to maintain its lead this year, but that they hope to take the luxury sales crown in 2012 (after saying they would do so in 2009). Lexus spokeswoman Nancy Hubbell responded this month that being the top seller in the luxury segment “has never been our goal.” With the exchange rate affecting profitability, it’s quite likely that overall sales numbers are just part of the equation

FAQs About the 2010 Prius/2010 Lexus HS 250h/Camry Voluntary Recalls

1. What is the problem with the 2010 Prius? The anti-lock brake system (ABS) in the 2010 model-year Prius, in normal operation, engages and disengages rapidly (many times per second) as the control system senses and reacts to tire slippage. Some owners have reported experiencing inconsistent brake feel during slow and steady application of the brakes on rough or slick road surfaces when the anti-lock brake system (ABS) is activated in an effort to maintain tire traction.

2. How is Toyota responding to this Prius issue? Toyota has responded to owner concerns with a running production change for the 2010 Prius that was introduced last month, improving the ABS system’s response time, as well as the system’s overall sensitivity to tire slippage. The recall will allow Toyota dealers to perform this software update in the anti-lock brake systems of 2010 Prius vehicles sold prior to this production change.

3. Why does this only impact 2010 Prius models? First- and second-generation Prius vehicles use a different ABS system and are not involved in this campaign.

4. What is the problem with the Lexus HS 250h? The anti-lock brake system on the Lexus HS 250h shares similar component design to the 2010 Prius, so it has been included on this recall.

5. How is Toyota responding to this Lexus issue? The software adjustment planned for the Lexus HS 250h production and dealer modification is being finalized and will be announced very soon.

6. How many vehicles are impacted? This recall involves approximately 133,000 2010 model year Prius vehicles and 14,550 Lexus Division 2010 HS 250h vehicles.

10. How long will it take for a dealer to repair my vehicle? The software update should only take approximately 30 minutes to install, depending on technician workflow.

11. Is the repair covered by warranty? Will drivers have to pay any money out of pocket for this work? Toyota will cover all repair costs associated with this work.

12. Is this recall related to the ongoing Toyota recalls associated with sudden unintended acceleration? No, this recall is unrelated to the ongoing recall of Toyota vehicles for sticking gas pedals and floor mat entrapment issues.

On certain early production 2010 model year Camry vehicles equipped with the 4-cylinder engine, a power steering pressure hose in the engine compartment may be the incorrect length. Should this condition continue, a hole may wear in the brake tube and deplete the brake fluid in the vehicle. As a result, the brake pedal stroke will increase and lead to greater vehicle stopping distance.

14. Which and how many vehicles are involved? Approximately 7,300 Camry vehicles in the U.S. are involved.

15. Are there any warnings that this condition exists? No, there are no specific warnings that this condition exists.

16. What is Toyota going to do? Any Toyota dealer will inspect and, if necessary, adjust the space between the brake tube and the power steering pressure hose crimp. Based upon the inspection results, the dealership may need to replace the brake tube. The inspection/adjustment and, if necessary, the brake tube replacement, will be performed at no charge to the vehicle owner.

17. When will Camry owners be notified? Toyota will notify owners by mail starting in mid-February 2010.

While listening to the radio, a volunteer opportunity caught my attention. This weekend will be a year that two young athletes were murdered in their Raytown home. Amir Clemons, 10, and Gerard Clemons,7 were exceptional basketball players and students. In remembrance of these two young boys, Clemons Memorial Basketball Classic was established in 2010.

The Clemons Memorial Basketball Classic was established in 2010 by the Clemons family in memory of their 10-year-old son Amir and 7-year-old son Gerard, who were tragically killed in a quadruple murder on March 16, 2009. The Clemons Memorial Basketball Classic is dedicated to promoting programs that provide recreational and educational activities for our youth. By doing so, it will help build their self-esteem and provide a safe haven to help them develop their basketball skills in a structured environment, and then to provide positive activities for our youth to keep them off the streets.

This weekend offers a fun and competitive time while it being for a good cause!

"I was driving when I saw the flash of a traffic camera. I figured that my picture had been taken for exceeding the limit even though I knew that I was not speeding. Just to be sure, I went around the block and passed the same spot, driving even more slowly, but again the camera flashed. Now I began to think that this was quite funny, so I drove even slower as I passed the area once more, but the traffic camera again flashed. I tried a fourth and fifth time with the same results and was now laughing as the camera flashed while I rolled past at a snail's pace. Two weeks later, I got five tickets in the mail for driving without a seat belt."
Moral of this story? 1. You can't fix stupid. 2. Wear your seatbelt!

Click It or Ticket, America's Seatbelt Campaign, is the most successful seat belt enforcement campaign ever, helping create the highest national seat belt usage rate of 83 percent, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

1. Has anyone ever told you its better off to be thrown from the vehicle? They're wrong. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 15,000 lives are saved each year in the United States because drivers and their passengers were wearing seat belts when they were in accidents.

2. The National Safety Council recently reported a drop in traffic fatalities for 2008, indicating a record low since the 1920s when it began publishing statistical reports. One reason given for the decline is the increased use of seat belts.

5. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, here’s how to select the right option for your child:

Rear-facing child safety seat. Children under age 1 and those who weigh less than 20 pounds should sit in rear-facing, child safety seats approved by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The seats should be placed in the backseat of the car.
Forward-facing child safety seat. Children older than 1 who weigh more than 20 pounds should ride in forward-facing child safety seats. The seat should be placed in the rear of the vehicle until the child reaches the upper weight or height limit of the particular seat. Typically, a child will outgrow a safety seat around age 4 and once she reaches about 40 pounds.
Booster seat. Children age 4 and older who weigh more than 40 pounds should ride in booster seats. A child can safely progress to a seat belt when the belt fits properly across the upper thighs and chest.
Seat belt. When children outgrow their booster seats, they can use seat belts, but they still should sit in the back of the vehicle.

Lexus CT 200h Brochure leak!

The Lexus CT 200h will officially debut on March 2nd at the Geneva Auto Show.

-The CT is built on an all new platform with a double-wishbone rear and tuned McPherson strut front suspension

-The 1.8L VVT-i engine found in the Prius is confirmed as the engine component of the CT 200h’s powertrain. No mention is made of overall horsepower.

-There will be four distinct driving modes: EV, Eco, Normal & Sport. Switching to sport will change the instrument panel and center console spotlight to red. (Nice touch!)

Citizens of the local African, Caribbean, Haitian community amongst others gathered at the VFW Hall in Overland Park to raise money for the Haitian Relief Efforts. The event featured a full authentic Caribbean buffet, a silent auction, and vendor bo...oths. Those in attendance danced to Caribbean and Haitian music and jams.
